If you have wondered what it would be like to live in a palace, think no further as you can stay in one at Chittoor Kottaram.

On a recent visit to Kochi, my first stop was at Chittoor Kottaram – a beautiful palace that is hidden from the main road and sits pretty on a private backwater stretch in the sleepy village of Chittoor.

The car maneuvers into a tiny lane and I am at the gate of the single key palace hotel. Milton the caretaker and the staff are waiting for me and I am welcomed with a traditional arati, sandalwood tika and ushered inside in style flanked by two staff carrying ornate umbrellas.

As I settle into the sofa, Milton says that this is a three deb property that can be hired by one guest and their family. Belonging to the erstwhile property, this as built by the king as a resting place post his temple visits in the vicinity.

I had a wonderful sadhya prepared by the team sitting on the banks of the backwaters and was delighted to see several birds including the blue tailed bee eater.
