Colour balance is one of the most essential element, that is often ignored, while designing your appropriate interior style. “Light colours should be used for walls of smaller and compact spaces. The space can further be attenuated with bright prints, florals or dark patterns to add a little character and liveliness. Mixing warm colours with cool creates a right balance for a homely feel. Neutral colors are here to stay for long, and texture is the new way to create interest in living spaces. Balancing your home’s colour palette requires a measured understanding of your personal style and furniture choices. Deciding on the style that best reflects your personality and the colours will follow from there. “Apart from this, the lighting in the space also determines the colours you should choose. For a warm and sunny room, opt for darker toned fabrics and textures to balance the brightness in the room. You can do the opposite for rooms with less lighting, opting for lighter coloured fabrics and reflective surfaces,” says Ritika Dhingra, Design Head | Visual Merchandising, Urban Ladder.

Textures add a distinct feel to the ambience. It depends on the way you choose to pair colour and texture. Certain elements may not be an absolute necessity, but can surely add to the overall aesthetics of your home. “Rugs and carpets are a great way of adding some solid texture to your room and a pop of colour which complements to the feel of the room. Wall decor will add another dimension to create a focal point or feature on a wall. While cushions are the showstoppers! They are responsible for adding the biggest pop of colours on your chairs and sofas. When selecting cushions, mix designs with plains and textures to add layers to the look you are trying to create,” says Lyndsay Smith – Buying Head, Westside Home. Textures are an excellent way to decorate bathrooms. Stone cladding are in trend at the moment. They can imbibe a timeless appeal and are also highly durable and long lasting. Playing with textures is a sure-fire way to add interest to a space. “Throw in a mix of patterned rugs, toss a bunch of embroidered cushions and you’ve got a recipe for success. A huge trend in home décor right now is tassel and pompom borders that work perfectly for the boho home owner. Make a neutral couch pop by tossing some vibrant cushions on it. Layer rugs of different hues and patterns to completely transform a room. Curtains also play a huge role and are a safe bet for adding a splash of colour,” says Vaishali Sinha, Founder, VLiving.

However, such rearrangements are observed commonly. Here are a few tips that will help you to create your surroundings as per the suitable aesthetics and taste using colour and texture. Additions of small pop of colour like from paintings and art works that are inspired by the colour palette of the room.   • To make the aesthetics soothing and welcoming, do not overload with colour and print.
  • Play with solids and neutral colours to balance it out.
  • As smooth textures reflect light, they can be paired with dark coloured interiors.
  • Choose textured surface finish according to the area and space. For interiors it is advisable to have a polished or waxed finish while for exteriors natural grainy finish works well.
  • Use of brave colours and patterns is good only if used in moderation. Try not to over-mix patterns otherwise they tend to clash with the aesthetics.
  • Each room should look and feel unique. Therefore, try to use different colour schemes and use of diverse themes in different spaces.
