It is that time of the year when all things new are trending. Well, after all it is the start of the New Year. And it is again time to look at what are some fashion dictates that will rule the year so that you can look haute and never make a faux pas!

Now Trending

2017 will be a year with a sudden explosion of feminine elements, floral prints, dramatic exaggerated lengths and a play of volume. “The upcoming spring-summer season will be focused on the show of skin, romance, soft feminine looks, flirty florals and a huge come back of the 80’s. Pretty flowing skirts, floral prints, romantic cuts, use of soft fabrics, frills, rushing and ribbons is all what 2017 is going to be about. There is going to be an explosion of ruffles, statement and exaggerated long, puffed, feminine and volumed sleeves and a plethora of airy laces, sheer fabrics in soft silhouettes and delicate detailing,” opine Aanchal & Sanjana Bubber of Bubber Couture. Feminine distortion of volume, billowing looks, numerous frills, gathered details, mermaid skirts, cinched sleeves, soft shimmer dresses, off shoulder necklines are the look for the upcoming spring-summer season. Neeraj Choudhary, Co-Founder, Eshopbox adds, “say goodbye to sticky pants in summers and get yourself cool parallel pants. Think Cullotes, Palazzos and Romper Pants. Button up trends, be it a shirt dress or a front buttoned skirt, anything you find buttons on is the pick for SS’17.” Capelets have been ruling the fashion scene ever since its emergence. “It comes back every season with a slight modification. It has that retro, vintage yet chic feel to it. Go wild with colours and patterns that accentuate your own fashion style,” advices Dimple Mirchandani, Founder, Secret Dresser

What Men Want

Pink has now found its way in men’s category and bold floral prints have also changed their way to menswear. “Layer-on-layer has always been fun. Distressed and washed denims have saved their place in 2017 and light denim shirts are similarly dapper. Short-sleeved shirts are an anomaly. Just do away with them and roll up your long sleeves or wear a T-shirt,” avers Sanjeev Mukhija, Founder Breakbounce. Double-breasted peacoats in fabric with textured surfaces are versatile, utilitarian, and provide the right mix between fun, fashion and business. “These sharp-fitted coats styled in short lengths, tick all boxes of the millennial man’s clothing wish-list and thus are a must-have trend for Autumn-Winter 2017. Wear it over a flat-knit turtle neck or over a blazer and combine it with soft denims or dressy flannels and you will never go wrong,” says a spokesperson from Tailorman. Playing with the patterns is in. “A jacket with gun club checks with polka dots, mixing of the two patterns works. Also, a combination of herringbone patterns with a glen plaid check. Apart from combination of patterns, spotted fabrics and jacquards will rule the men’s tailoring industry,” says Rohan Gupta, Director, Sartojiva. Mamtaa Gupta, Founder & Owner, Buzzaria Dukaan says, “one of the trendiest fashion style will be Stripes. They are equivalent to what a white T -shirt used to be back in days.” A spokesperson from Threads and Shirts, adds, “playing with prints has not been restricted just to shirts but has also been incorporated to ties as well. These printed ties add spunk to your wardrobe giving it a revitalized look.” Sanjiv Shroff, Director, Camessi opines, “we believe checks will be completely in vogue next year. Also black and white shirts and monochrome shirts will create a trend. As for trousers, we are looking at coloured trousers as men these days have starting adopting more bolder looks.”

Styles That Matter

The Vintage Box Pleats / Simple Pleats was a classic look in older era which started to trend again, this is a trend which is gaining popularity year by year and is said to rock the closets in 2017 as well. “The gorgeous pleats have been adorned by numerous style divas across the globe and is a must have for everyone who wants to stay upbeat with today’s fashion. From Alexander McQueen to Desi brands every label small or big is obsessed with the classic pleated ensembles. For 2017 this trend will continue to gain popularity and can be estimated to rock the Prêt wear as well as elegant couture garments,” says Ashima Sharma, Fashion Designer, Ashima S Couture. In fact revitalization of old trends seem to be the way forward. Mithun Gupta Director, Bodycare International says, “we foresee this running parallel to new and visionary designs. Athleisure wear made a formidable impact in 2016 and should continue to be a major fashion trend of 2017.  Cold shoulder tops is also a trend that would be part of any women wardrobe in 2017.” Likewise, romance continues to be a key theme and trend. “It is seen through Victorian and ‘War & Peace’ historical styling, soft florals, ruffles, lace, and high neckline detailing. Biker influences will be strong for the season, with the classic leather biker jacket being the one garment everyone should have in their wardrobe, however it is interpreted. Biker looks less ‘rock chick’ and has a much softer feel for 2017,” says a spokesperson from ‘London Design Team’, Cover Story.

Creating Looks

Designer Rohit Bal suggests that the bride focuses on the styling rather than heavy embellishments and very complicated outfits. “Beautiful fabrics like cutworks, jamdanis, dhakais, chanderis – these are the kind of fabrics I like to use. They are organic but at the same time they have that bridal feeling. For the male, similar to my collection showcased at van Heusen and GQ Fashion Nights 2016, looks will be experimental with a strong sense of adventure; the collection is definitely for the brave-hearted, embodying the spirit of spontaneity.” Designers have taken a strong hold of the bell-sleeve silhouette and they are not letting go anytime soon. “Dress up a pair of straight-leg jeans with a bell-sleeve ribbed sweater and ladylike heels. For an evening out, pair a statement top with a pencil skirt. By opting for a cream palette, it will keep your look fresh and youthful. For a fall party, balance a long hemline and voluminous sleeves by opting for a dress with an off-the-shoulder shape,” says Zarine Ahmed, Co-founder, Findow. Sheen and shine is definitely going to be a major trend in 2017. “Metallics, satin and velvet are the fabrics of the season. They have been incorporated in not only the more dressy party styles but also casual wear. Adding some bling to your look in the form of a metallic crop top, satin jumpsuit or velvet track pants is already seen being done by the fashion elite like Gigi Hadid and Kendall Jenner,” says Priyanka Agarwal, Founder, Uptownie 101.

Colour Me Right

Pantones shades especially Niagra, a soft blue hue, like a gentle denim wash which can be matched with anything will be in. Primrose Yellow, a buttery, sunny yellow, Lapis Blue Dramatic orange, Kale a duller nature green, Pink Yarrow a beetroot shade and dark Hazelnut are colours that will rule clothes. Designer Karan Arora says, “2017 is going to get down much on deeper colours, neat and structured cut with detailed craftsmanship and minimalistic bling as against previous year, which has been about pastels with bling and asymmetrical cuts.” Fashion designer Hardika Gulati adds, “graphic waves and technical wars will be the most popular colour trends. While Khaki will rule the market like never before, it is the fusion and blend of patterns and textures that will catch the fancy of many fashion lovers.” Anshu Choudhury, Stylist Craftsvilla adds, ”from tiny all-over prints to placement prints, florals are a perfect fit for the summer and holiday season. Powder blues and milky pinks, pastels will rule 2017. One can definitely expect this colour to be dominating the ramps.”The mantra is simple – make sure that you are comfortable wearing what you are and it suits your body type. And that will truly make you rocking!

Do’s & Dont’s

  • Say goodbye to the oversized clothing.
  • Avoid pairing contrasting coordinates with over detailing paired together.
  • Avoid fusion clothing as it leads to a cluster look.
