A visit to Gandhinagar, India’s first operational smart city is all about experiencing the old and the new.

Heading to GIFT City Gandhinagar from Ahmedabad’s International Airport is a breeze. The 25-minute drive is all about great roads, a carpet of greenery and a pop of colour courtesy the stunning bougainvillea blooms that dot the landscape. Driving into the gates of GIFT City I cannot help but notice the signage that asks you to follow the rules of the city. I am headed to the newly opened Grand Mercure Gandhinagar GIFT City a brand new 151 room property that has its design ethos heavily inspired from Ahmedabad’s culture and traditions.

Bijoy Sengupta, General Manager, explains, “GIFT City is being developed as a state-of-the-art financial hub and all the utilities are in an underground tunnel that has Power Cables, Water Treatment Plant, chilled water supply from District Cooling Pipe, Automated Waste Collection pipe line and Fire hydrant water pipe line.”
