Health Insurance for the Gig Economy

Health insurance for those in informal economy especially domestic workers and people in the gig economy continues to be something of a mirage.

One of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) is to “ensure healthy lives and promoting well-being for all, at all ages”. Further to this both the central and state governments are implementing health related schemes to cover all the people in the state. National Health Insurance Schemes from the National government aim to make health insurance accessible to the economically weaker sections of the society. The Rashtriya Swasthya Bima Yojana offers health insurance coverage to BPL families in an economical manner with fixed hospital rates and hospitalization cover limit of Rs. 30000 for five members of the family. The premium is paid by the Government. The Employment State Insurance Scheme offers full medical cover to members and their dependents. The Aam Aadmi Bima Yojana aplicable to rural, landless households provides a variety of compensation for death and disabilities. Universal Health Insurance Scheme is being provided by four public insurers and helps with hospitalization cover limit of Rs. 30000 and death cover of Rs. 25000 while the Janashree Bima Yojana gives health insurance for people aged between 18 and 59. The Ayushman Bharat National Health Protection Mission has a cover of Rs. 5 lakh per family per year and is slated to cover over 10 crore poor families.
