Renowned classical dancer and Padmashri awardee Geeta Chandran is an artist who is adept at not just Bharatanatyam but also practices Carnatic music.

Hailing from a rather conservative family, studies were always important, even as training in the arts, both Bharatanatyam and Carnatic Music that began when Chandran was just five years old. Being focused, she had good grades through school and went on to graduate in Mathematical Statistics from the prestigious Lady Shri Ram College in Delhi University. She then armed herself with a master’s Program in Communications at the Indian Institute of Mass Communications.

A holistic artiste, she has had stints in television, video and film, theatre, choreography, dance education, dance activism and dance-issue journalism.

For someone who has received many awards, she says they only bring an additional burden of responsibility.

She engages in a strategic range of dance-related activities – performing, teaching, conducting, singing, collaborating, organizing, writing, using social media, and motivating a wide variety of youth audiences.
