If you are looking to try new restaurants, there is a brand new one all set to open its doors in Koramangala (in place of Punjab Grill) called Punjab Bistro. I was invited for a special sneak peek into the menu and tried several vegetarian options that were lip smacking and delectable.

This new age Bistro done up in muted colours has a nice chic décor and the large airy space has a feel good vibe. Sajal Jassal, Founder & CEO Punjab Bistro says, “we have built this place on the principal of 3 Ps – Purity, Pride and Passion which will be reflected in our service and food. Culture evolves with time and so does food habits. We understand the changing taste of people in modern India and Punjab Bistro will showcase the fine balance between traditional and contemporary.” Executive Chef Masaroor Waris Khan has conceptualized an interesting menu with a fresh take on typical Punjabi food and has a mix of lip-smacking grills and appetizers, delectable mains, varieties of bread, eye-pleasing desserts and matta, lassi, smoothies, milkshakes as well as hard drinks Punjabi style.

We started our meal with an amuse bouch a bite sized yoghurt based dish that was the perfect appetite stimulator. The first thing we tried were the mocktails like the Vermillon, a healthy drink made with cold pressed orange juice, carrot and thyme that was delightfully fresh and the Asian fusion made with Basil, Mint, Grapes and Thyme a light refresher. We also sampled the Mast Guava a drink with zing courtesy its bold flavours and a hint of chaat masala as well as the Pineapple sparkler mocktail made with kaffir lime, fresh pineapple and ginger. In between the meal we also tried the Kesar – Pisteywali lassi, a saffron flavoured yoghurt with pistachio that acts as a lovely balance to a meal that has many varied flavours.

Starting with the Tomato and basil shorbha, a soup infused with basil and served with garlic rusk, was the perfect way to whet our appetite. We tried an array of vegetarian starters like the Chilgoza Paneer that was soft and delectable stuffed with pine nuts, cheese, dill leaves and marinated with tandoori red masala. The beetroot peanut ki tikki made with beetroot, peanut butter, nuts, crumbled coating and potato shaped tikkis and crumb fried had the right crunch and the mint chutney it came with was superb. The broccoli cheese lollipop made with far, fresh Broccoli, potato and two kinds of cheese and panko fried was another winner with its simple flavours where the ingredients shone through. My vote however goes to the Palak corn quesadillas a Chef special with corn palak tossed with spices, cheese and butter, pan grilled, served with tandoori tomato chutney. A must try this is a melt in your mouth dish that will leave you asking for more.

Feeling quite full, we asked for a smaller main course and sampled the Firangi subzi, made with English vegetables like zucchini, baby corn and bell pepper simmered in cheesy gravy and the Baingan Ka Bharta made with Brinjal roasted on charcoal, mixed with herbs and served on spaghetti squash with the Chur chur paratha and Sheermal breads. Our meal ended on a sweet note with the Bistro special Mille feuille – a dish layered with rasagullas and strawberries that made for an interesting combination. We also tried the Malpua pudding a bread and fruit layered dessert that never felt to sweet and yet the flavours came together beautifully, much like the rest of this meal. The liquid pan in a shot glass at the end was the perfect finishing touch. So get ready for a gastronomic journey the Punjab Bistro way.
