The city of Udaipur with its pristine lakes, stunning palaces and royal past is a charming getaway that makes for a great holiday. Here are some of the places that you must see on your next visit to the city of lakes.

City Palace

The sprawling city palace complex is in a way the central part of the city around which everything else revolves. This is also the home of the royal family of Udaipur headed by the 76th custodian of the House of Mewar, Arvind Singh Mewar or Shriji as he is popularly known as. Set on the banks of Lake Pichola, the City Palace is now largely a museum that houses several artefacts of the royal family. There is continuous work and upkeep that happens here on a continual basis and you will always see something new here. The palace itself is an off white structure that has stunning balconies and towers and offers some stunning views of the lake on one side and the city on the other. Take a boat ride on Lake Pichola and you can see the beautiful lake Palace which is now converted into a five star property. Do stop at the island here that houses Jag Mandir a beautiful palace that is a famed spot for many Bollywood films and was the place that inspired Shah Jahan to build the Taj Mahal.

Jagdish Temple

Built in the mid 17thcentury, the Jagdish Temple is located in the midst of the bustling local market place flanked by tiny stores that sell a variety of handlooms and handicrafts. The temple can be accessed by a flight of stairs and is dedicated to Lord Vishnu. The pristine white structure is surrounded with intricate carved pillars and figurines all around that makes for a compelling visual. Also stop by at the Jagat Shiromani temple close by here.

Saheliyon Ki Bari

This is a beautiful garden that was designed to be a space for the women of the royal family and translates to the Garden of Maidens. Lined with beautiful floral pathways, there are fountains, water bodies and carved elephants that add to the quaint charm of this place. Maharana Sangram Singh II has built this garden as a space for the royal women and their friends to spend time with each other.

A rural arts and crafts complex this is a place where you can experience rural life especially of the tribal and folk artists. There are small models of homes of potters and weavers built here and you can also see the crafts persons working here. There are a few stalls that sell local handicrafts and jewellery as well so you can shop for some authentic Rajsthani artefacts as well.

Vintage Car Collection

If you love automobiles do stop to see the collection of vintage cars owned by Arvind Singh Mewar. The collection of cars is impeccably maintained and is a delight to see. The 20 plus cars include an awarded 1924 Rolls Royce 20H.P, Cadillacs, an MG-TC Convertible, Ford-A Convertible and Vauxhall-12, all of which are motor-able.
