Winter Skin Hydration

Spread the love

Winters are the harshest time of the year for the skin. The air is colder, less humid, and windier. As a result, the air gets extremely dry. In addition, heaters, and hot water showers, dry the skin out significantly more. This results in dry skin not only on the face but the whole body. The skin can feel tight and rough but it is also prone to getting more itchy, irritated and red. Winters also lead to more allergens, such as dander and dust, that impact the skin severely and make the skin react.

Hydration is the simple yet powerful key to fighting all of these symptoms. With a hydrated and plump skin barrier, it is incredible how many steps and treatments one can skip while keeping the skin glowing and healthy.

Several ingredients hydrate and moisturize the skin. While drinking enough water remains one of the key ways certain ingredients help the skin topically to feel dewy and fresh.

  • Hyaluronic Acid: A hydration hero everyone has come to know and love, hyaluronic acid is a humectant that helps the skin retain moisture and prevents it from losing steam as well. It is essential in a skincare routine year-round, especially during colder months.
  • Squalane: An emollient that is a variation of naturally occurring squalene, this is an ingredient that conditions, soothes and hydrates skin. This is especially helpful for itchy and irritated skin.
  • Ceramides: Ceramides help to lock in moisture into the skin, therefore aiding in barrier building and making the skin stronger and plumper than ever.
  • Also, use occlusives like shea butter that create a barrier and prevent moisture loss.
  • Fatty Acids (e.g., Omega-3 and Omega-6): These contribute to the lipid barrier of the skin, helping to retain moisture and maintain skin suppleness.
  • Aloe Vera: Known for its soothing properties, aloe vera helps to hydrate the skin and reduce inflammation.
  • Vitamin E: An antioxidant that can help protect the skin from damage caused by free radicals and support skin hydration.

The more moisturization, the better! Moisturizing twice a day every day is the best way to help skin be balanced and prevent it from drying out. Avoiding excessive hot showers, harsh soaps, and overuse of alcohol-based products is crucial to prevent skin dehydration. Additionally, not drinking enough water and neglecting a moisturizing routine can impact skin hydration negatively.
