We live in times when technology and everything around us move so fast. The world is not the same, and it never will be, because we as people are constantly evolving. Because we evolve, we have to remind ourselves to still appreciate nature and appreciate things we cannot see every day. That is the artist’s job: to bring what is not within sight to viewers for them to understand and feel moved by. It can be abstract work, it can be realism, it can be all of it. It can be sculpture, it can be technology-based art—again, the sky is the limit. This is my mindset as an artist and creator.

Before Janavi begins to create new work, she is in heavy conversation with innovative scientific thinkers. “I like to understand how corals, algae, and species function on a reef. My curiosity and mind lead me into really questioning how we can help or learn from these observations,” she says.

The opportunities that we have in this world to create are constantly abundant, even when we feel like they’re not there. This unique ability to create is what makes our species so unique. India’s fragile landscape is honestly not fragile. It is ruthless, resilient.” I have seen little villages along the coast thrive ecologically, even with some of the toughest situations of water pollution, and I keep reminding myself and others that nature has a way to keep growing. Anthropogenic changes are real, and we must start thinking about how we can use those changes to help our environment,” she says.

We have seen glimpses of what is possible. After the extraordinary community cleanup of Versova Beach in Mumbai, Olive Ridley hatchlings were documented there in 2018 for the first time in roughly two decades. “We cannot say the cleanup alone caused their return, but to me, it is a powerful reminder of what can happen when people begin to care for an ecosystem again,” she adds.
