If you are someone who enjoys history, heritage and architecture, a walk in Amritsar’s old town is what you need.
Here are some of the places you can see:
- Town Hall built by the British in 1866.
- Gurdwara Saragarahi a memorial for the 21soldiers of the 36 Sikh Battalion.
- Qila Ahluwalia for Jassa Singh Ahluwalia who helped quell foreign invasions during the 18th Century.
- Jalebiwala Chowk a gastronome’s delight.
- Udasin Ashram Akhara Sangalwala founded in 1771.
- Chitta Akhara or Ganga Raam Akhara was established in 1781.
- Darshani Deori is where Sri Guru Arjun and Sri Guru Hargobind would stand to view the Golden Temple.
- Baba Bohar has a large banyan tree which is considered sacred.
- Thakurdwara Dariana Mal has beautiful colonial-style architecture.
- Christi Atari built by Sri Guru Hargobind Sahib, the sixth of the ten Gurus in the 1600s, with four passages and thirty-two shops.
- Taksal (mint) in Katra Hari Singh is Amritsar’s first mint, where Sikh regime coins were once minted.
- Thakurdwara Raja Tej Singh was built in Katra Jamadar in 1851 by Raja Tej Singh.
- Crawling Street marks Jallianwala Bagh shootout which killed hundreds of Sikhs on orders of General Dyer.
- Ancient Passage is a typical archway between various mohallas and katras of old Amritsar, established by Sikh Misls.
