From understanding the guest’s skin condition to the pressure limits and more, bespoke treatments are seeing more traction as well as carrying brownie points at award ceremonies. Another key element that is being measured is what kind of sustainability practices are in place. And how the spa has adopted practices that are ecologically sensitive. The idea is also to see what kind of measurable wellness outcomes are available. Spas aligned with global wellness metrics, especially from the likes of the Global Wellness Institute, have a superior positioning as well.
Alongside this, spas are also being assessed on their technology integration and adoption. This includes a variety of aspects, from biofeedback rooms and AI-based diagnostics to sleep tracking and more. Most importantly, these integrations are being looked at as being seamless without disrupting cultural authenticity.
Also, spas that reinterpret Indian healing traditions through contemporary design language score higher, as they can add value to their offering. Many spas earlier positioned themselves as Balinese or Thai specialists, but the focus today, especially when it comes to awards, is all about a shift that is rooted in local colour. Think Himalayan healing narratives, South Indian temple-inspired spatial sequencing, or even indigenous botanical therapies.
And where spas win is when they can integrate biophilic design, vernacular material revival, climate-responsive planning, and a sense of place that adds a unique touch. Most spas also have a signature fragrance that automatically elevates the mood of guests as well.
