As Bangalore’s green cover is seeing a rapid decline, a spate of news about tree cutting is making the situation even more grim.
A recent news report has indicated that the Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) has requested permission from the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) to axe about 155 trees for the construction of vehicle parking space in its Management School premises in Doddanekundi Road, Marathahalli. On December 8, the GBA’s tree officer, who is also the deputy conservator of forests (DCF) has also made the request public, inviting objections in 10 days. And make no mistake these are old trees including Tora Matti, Green Bamboo, Nerale, Kari Jali, Akesiya, Sihi Hunuse, Rain trees, among others.
To add to these woes the Government has recently made a U Turn on two other projects that are sure to have environmentalists fuming.
After having decided to shelve the proposed international flower market inside the Gandhi Krishi Vigyan Kendra (GKVK) campus, they are now preparing to sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the horticulture department and University of Horticultural Sciences (UHS), Bagalkot.
Bengaluru Cantonment biodiversity heritage site status has been cancelled. The issue is now the 368 trees here are at risk.
