In recent years, India has taken significant steps to tackle water scarcity while strengthening community participation in water management.

Government initiatives like the Jal Jeevan Mission aim to provide safe drinking water through tap connections to every rural household. This program has been extended until 2028, ensuring millions of families gain reliable access to clean water. Another key initiative, the Jal Shakti Abhiyan – Catch the Rain campaign , focuses on rainwater harvesting, groundwater recharge, community involvement, and water conservation.

Across 148 districts, communities are encouraged to collect and store rainwater for later use. Additionally, thousands of women have been trained to test and monitor water quality in villages using field kits. These steps not only improve water access but also give women a central role in water governance and decision-making. Despite these measures, water scarcity continues to be an issue in many regions. Rapid population growth, global warming, and excessive use of groundwater have put tremendous pressure on rivers, lakes, and groundwater. In many families, women and girls are still at the forefront in the struggle to collect water, and they travel long distances every day, carrying heavy containers. This daily struggle limits their time for education, employment, and personal development , highlighting the strong link between water access and gender equality.

Equally important is the involvement of women , who bring practical knowledge and unique insights from managing household water. Their participation strengthens planning, monitoring, and maintenance of water systems, making conservation efforts more efficient and inclusive. By engaging the entire community, especially women, these initiatives promote social cohesion, empower individuals, and build resilient communities capable of addressing water challenges while advancing development and equality.
