Beyond the Familiar reflects Gallery G’s continuing commitment to presenting South Indian art in all its diversity.

They believe galleries have a responsibility not only to exhibit established names, but also to create meaningful opportunities for artists whose practices deserve wider recognition.

An exhibition such as this is an invitation to collectors, students and art enthusiasts alike to discover new perspectives and engage with the evolving artistic landscape of the region.

Ultimately, the future of Indian art will be richer when its many regional histories and contemporary voices are given the visibility they deserve.

For Gallery G, this is also part of a larger commitment: to ensure that the artistic legacy of South India is not only preserved and celebrated but continues to grow through new generations.

There is often a tendency to associate South Indian art primarily with its classical traditions or with a relatively small group of recognised modern masters. While these histories are immensely important, there is also a vibrant community of artists continuing to develop their own distinctive expressions.

The sixteen artists in this exhibition demonstrate the breadth of that creativity, from intimate narratives and figurative painting to experimental sculpture, textiles and abstraction.

The hope is that the exhibition encourages viewers to look beyond familiar categories, discover artists they may not have encountered before, and recognise the importance of supporting artistic practices as they evolve.

South Indian art and culture have a rich tradition, especially in sculpture, mythology and folk art. Working upon the rich foundation of South Indian Modern Art, it is only natural to think as an extension of that legacy.
