Still House, a 4,000 sq ft private residence located in Chennai is designed by Amrita Thomas of Alara Studio. Conceived as a restrained architectural framework, Still House is a refined exploration of contemporary Indian craft, where material intelligence and collaboration with designers and makers shape the spatial narrative. The home is defined by high ceilings, generous volumes, and continuous grey marble flooring that establishes a calm, understated backdrop. Within this setting, sculptural furniture, crafted lighting, and collected objects bring depth and character to the space.
The design is rooted in a muted, intentional palette, where colour is introduced sparingly through textiles and art. Materials such as cane, concrete, wood, and ceramic are expressed in their most honest forms—woven, cast, carved, and hand-finished—highlighting the integrity of making over ornamentation. A strong emphasis on collaboration is central to the project.
Spatially, the residence unfolds through carefully composed zones—from a foyer that sets a tone of curation and memory, to a living area articulated through sculptural interventions and material contrast. The dining space is anchored by a striking concrete dome installation, while private areas maintain a softer, more intimate expression of the overall design language.
