Hotels are increasingly using data, technology and human observation to create more personalised guest experiences. Instead of waiting for guests to make requests, hotel teams are being trained to anticipate needs by closely monitoring feedback, preferences and service histories. This approach is particularly relevant for business, MICE and bleisure travellers, whose expectations can vary significantly. Personalisation therefore involves moving away from standardised offerings towards experiences shaped around specific guest needs.

A centralised guest profile can help ensure that preferences such as room temperature, pillow type, room location, bedding, dietary requirements, special occasions and previous service interactions are available when guests stay at different properties within a network. Information from reservations, loyalty programmes, restaurants, digital platforms and post-stay feedback can be brought together to create a more comprehensive understanding of guest expectations. Review platforms and surveys also provide valuable insights into recurring concerns, preferences and areas for improvement.

Artificial intelligence and predictive analytics play an increasingly important role by identifying patterns in guest sentiment and behaviour. However, technology alone cannot deliver meaningful personalisation. Data can indicate what deserves attention, but hotel employees must interpret those insights and translate them into thoughtful service. Staff observation, training and genuine interaction remain essential to understanding what a guest may want, sometimes before they explicitly ask for it.

Personalisation also requires a careful balance with privacy. Guest information should be collected and used with clear consent and for a defined purpose. Guests should be able to access, correct or manage their information, while hotels should avoid making assumptions about preferences that have not been voluntarily shared.

Although personalisation cannot be considered the sole reason for stronger business performance, it contributes to guest satisfaction, loyalty and the likelihood of repeat visits. When guests feel recognised and understood, personalised experiences can positively influence how they evaluate their stay and their willingness to return.
