If there is one fabric pattern that I am partial to it is Ikat. Maybe it is the geometric precision or the varied kinds that are seen in the country, I have always been drawn to it.
And with my growing years in Hyderabad, I had ample opportunity to see the Ikats at close quarters, My visits to Pochampally only helped me understand the nuances of the fabric better and on my most recent trip to Hyderabad, I finally made my way to understand the unique Telia Rumal and meet the man who is synonymous with the fabric, Gajam Govardhana.
During the conversation, he told me about his village Puttapaka and how a few artisans are keeping the traditional alive. he has not just ensured that the fabric has gotten a GI tag but is also encouraging younger generations to continue with the weave. His efforts have also earned him the Padma Shri.
