There is a clear movement towards bringing professional-style recovery experiences into residential environments. Consumers are becoming more conscious of recovery and are looking for convenient solutions that can become part of their everyday routines. Products such as massage guns, compression systems, heated recovery devices and compact massage equipment are becoming more accessible. This is also influencing residential design. It is expected to see dedicated wellness corners, recovery rooms and multifunctional spaces becoming more common in homes, especially where wellness is treated as a lifestyle rather than an occasional luxury.

Air quality is fundamental to wellness, although it is often less visually obvious than lighting or furniture. A beautifully designed spa cannot provide a truly healthy experience if ventilation, humidity and air quality are not properly addressed. Modern wellness spaces therefore need to consider fresh-air circulation, filtration, humidity control and temperature management from the beginning of the design process.

This is part of responsible interior design. These systems should ideally be integrated into the architecture rather than treated as afterthoughts. Comfort should be felt by the user without the technology becoming visually intrusive.

Fragrance can significantly influence the emotional perception of a space. It is one of the most powerful sensory elements because it can immediately create associations with calmness, freshness, nature or luxury. Smart fragrance systems allow scents to be controlled more precisely, including intensity, timing and potentially different fragrances for different zones or treatments. There is an opportunity to treat fragrance in the same way we treat lighting—as an architectural layer. However, subtlety is essential. A wellness environment should never feel overwhelmed by scent. The fragrance should complement the space rather than become the space.

The next generation will move away from isolated products towards integrated wellness ecosystems. Lighting, temperature, air quality, water, sound, scent, treatment equipment and furniture will increasingly communicate with one another to create a personalised environment. The user may simply select an experience, while the space automatically adjusts the different environmental parameters.

But technology alone will not define the future of wellness design. The most successful spaces will combine technology with thoughtful architecture, natural materials, good acoustics, privacy, human comfort and emotional sensitivity. A successful wellness environment is created through the relationship between many small design decisions—the lighting, colours, textures, seating, flooring, visual screening and spatial transitions. When these elements work together, the space becomes more than an interior; it becomes an experience. For us, that is the real direction of contemporary wellness design: creating spaces where technology supports the experience, while design remains human at its core.

Water efficiency is particularly important. Our philosophy at Hansgrohe is that sustainability should not require consumers to compromise on comfort. Technologies such as EcoSmart reduce water consumption while maintaining a satisfying shower experience. This is where engineering becomes important—rather than simply asking consumers to use less water, we look at how water can be delivered more intelligently.

Hygiene and ease of maintenance are also becoming more relevant, particularly as consumers become more conscious of everyday health and cleanliness. Ergonomics and intuitive controls matter equally because the best technology is often the technology that feels effortless to use.

There is a move towards bathrooms where design, performance, sustainability and ease of use are considered together, rather than as separate features.

Water has always had a strong connection with wellness, but modern shower systems are turning that basic function into a much more immersive experience. Rain showers, body jets, hand showers, steam and temperature variations can create different sensory experiences depending on the treatment. The ability to control water flow, temperature, and sequences allows the experience to become more personalized. From a design perspective, detailing is equally important. Materials, drainage, lighting, textures and acoustics all contribute to how the shower area is perceived. The objective should be to make even a functional transition between treatments feel like part of the wellness journey.
