Even as World Coconut Day is celebrated on September 2nd, we speak to Bangalore’s denizens on what this ubiquitous ingredient means to them.

As a South Indian, coconuts are essential in cooking for all our auspicious occasions in our family. It symbolises prosperity and enhances our dishes with unique flavour and texture, whether a delectable dessert, a hearty sambar, or a pudi with a long shelf-life.

Mukhtar Khan is a permanent fixture around Richards Town, near Clarence School. He has become a familiar face to parents, students, and residents alike, offering refreshing coconut water and a friendly chat. Mukhtar not only quenches our thirst but also keeps us updated on the latest happenings in our little town. One of my most surprising moments with him was when he asked if he could buy my car whenever I decided to sell it. It was heartwarming to see that in our small corner of the world, Mukhtar’s aspirational dreams are coming true.

For me, coconuts are tied to my memories of growing up in Bangalore with my grandparents. During festivals, my grandmother would make the most delicious Kayi Obattu and I was required to grate nearly 10-20 coconuts in the morning.
