November 1st is an important day in the calendar of the state of Karnataka as it is the day that marks the formation of the state in 1956 and is celebrated as Rajyotsava.
The sea of yellow and red flags, the colours of Karnataka state flag is unmissable on the 1st of November as the state celebrates the day when all Kannada speaking regions merged to become Karnataka.
The day is a holiday and is marked by hoisting of the state flag, and you cannot miss the notes of the state anthem ‘Jaya Bharata Jananiya Tanujate’. However, while there were no major celebrations in the first few years, things kicked off in 1963 when Kannada writer and activist Ma Ramamurthy created the vibrant yellow and red hued Karnataka flag.
In 1973 when the name of the State was changed from Mysore to Karnataka, there was a grand celebration. This year there is a mandate to hoist the Karnataka flag in all commercial and educational organisations. This move is largely aimed to ensure that the language I promoted and cultural identity is preserved.
