Landslides in India

Spread the love

The last month has seen a multitude of landslides in India, the major one being in the villages of Punjirimattom, Mundakkai, Chooralmala, Attamala, Meppadi and Kunhome in Wayanad district in Kerala.

In scenes of devastation that unfolded in the middle of the night, the force of the water that gushed down, actually wiped out the entire village.

Landslides have also been reported from the hilly northern areas of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. The issue is that this is not new. Every year, monsoons are now seeing an increase in land slides in India.

What is causing them however is a cause of concern. Rapid depletion of green cover – making way for industries, agriculture and urbanisation is being seen as the cause of the same.

As the hills are being cut to make way for infrastructural projects especially new roads that make the highways, there have been reports of land slides in the exact regions.
