Maha Kumbh is the biggest spiritual and cultural gathering in the world, drawing millions of devotees and visitors from every corner of the globe. This extraordinary event occurs every 12 years and is deeply embedded in the rich tapestry of India’s historical and mythological traditions. It symbolises profound spiritual cleansing and the earnest quest for salvation.
The 13 Akhadas, or monastic orders central to Hindu spirituality, are at its heart. Among them, the Naga Akhadas stand out, with their ascetic warriors, the Naga Sadhus, leading iconic Shahi Snan processions at the holy Sangam, the confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and Saraswati rivers. These rituals symbolise purification and the pursuit of liberation (moksha).
