A torchbearer of the Senia Maihar Gharana, Purbayan Chatterjee has built a remarkable global presence through both classical mastery and genre-defying collaborations.
Over the years, he has worked with some of the most respected names in music, including Zakir Hussain, Shankar Mahadevan, Pat Metheny, Béla Fleck and Jordan Rudess. His projects such as Unbounded – Abaad and Sukhino Bhavantu have been widely recognized for their ambitious scope and cross-cultural vision.
Beyond performance, his contributions as a mentor and innovator through initiatives like Shastriya Syndicate, Classicool and The Sitar Stories have played a key role in reshaping how Indian classical music is presented to contemporary global audiences.
In June, he will release his album Feathered Creatures, a cross-cultural collaboration with Grammy-winning guitarist Mark Lettieri of Snarky Puppy. The project explores a rich sonic dialogue between sitar and electric guitar, pushing the boundaries of contemporary fusion while remaining deeply rooted in raga tradition. The duo will also be performing the album live in Kolkata around the release.
