
A photo exhibition turns the spotlight on H.H. Sri Jaya Chamaraja Wadiyar, the last maharaja of Mysore and throws lights on his contributions to Bangalore apart from his other work.
Do you know what is common to Hindustan Aircraft Company, All India Institute of Speech & Hearing, National Tuberculosis Institute, Government Flight Training School Jakkur, and Central Food Technological Research Institute? Well, all of these have been started or commissioned by H.H. Sri Jaya Chamaraja Wadiyar, whose 105th birth anniversary is being celebrated at the Indian Institute of World Culture, in Basavanagudi. There are 144 photographs in the show.
A keen sportsman himself, he organised the XII Indian Olympic Games at Bangalore in 1946 and built the modern Sri Jayachamarajendra Stadium now Kanteerava Stadium), complete with a sports township to accommodate athletes.
He built three temples in Mysore City: Bhuvaneshvari Temple and Gayatri Temple, located inside the Mysore Palace Fort, and Sri Kamakaameshwari Temple, situated on Ramanuja Road, Mysore. He has donated a Golden Kolaga (Mask) to the ancient Trineshwara Temple inside Mysore palace Fort after the birth of his son. It is used only on the night of Mahashivaratri every year. He has also gifted ornate silver doors to the Chamundeswari Temple.
