Ghee – Good or Bad

A key ingredient in most Indian households, ghee has been under the scanner for a while now. While initially, there was a notion that ghee must be avoided for health reasons.

Today, however, nutritionists have started recommending ghee as part of daily diets. So should you have ghee or not? When actor Kareena Kapoor told the world that she ate ghee as part of her diet suggested by dietician Rujuta Diwekar the spotlight was once again back on the traditional fat used in most Indian kitchens.

Zamurrud Patel, Consultant Nutritionist at Global Hospitals Mumbai adds, “ghee must be avoided by people who are obese or are suffering from any heart or kidney ailments, or stomach related problems. Anyone can have it once or twice a week. Obese or overweight people should avoid it as it may add to their weight and could cause in making them unhealthier.”

“Ghee in particular is extremely beneficial as part of a well-balanced diet because of its high nutrient content and the fact that it doesn’t contain casein and lactose makes it acceptable to even people who are allergic to dairy,” says Nutritionist Kajal Mahajan.
