Chay Reds, Ferrous Black: The untold stories of Indian trade textiles in Sri Lanka is a new show at Museum of Art & Photography (MAP) Bengaluru that aims to trace how Indian textiles made their way to Sri Lanka.
The exhibition is about the textile trade between Indian and Sri Lanka, an aspect that is relatively lesser known about and the Indian ocean has been the route of this maritime trade. This peaked between the 13th and 15th century as trade routes were established and ceramics, precious metals, gems, rare wood, ivory, and spices were traded.
Curated by Yash Sanhotra, a designer, researcher, and educator who has specialised in South Asian textiles, the exhibition is a sensory and visual delight.
There are also several image reproductions that sit snugly among the large exhibits that are mounted on the walls and if you watch carefully, you can see the people wearing these fabrics.
There is also a tactile display of blocks that you can touch and feel that are part of MAP’s haveli collection that will give you a fair idea of how the patterns on these fabrics have been created. In all a visit to this exhibition will give you a good insight into how fabrics were traded in the sub-continent. The visual imagery and the informative info graphics will ensure it is a well spent day.
