Pillowcases do affect the health of the skin as they build up oils, sweat, and product residue and can block pores, causing acne or irritation.
Sleep may be the cause of wrinkles of a particular type which we call sleep lines. Your face is pressed against the pillow when you sleep on your side or stomach and this causes hours of repeated pressure and folding of the skin. As time passes, these lines may be formed as small wrinkles, particularly along the cheeks, forehead and along the jawline. In contrast to expression lines, which are a result of movement of the muscles, sleep wrinkles are typically vertical or diagonal, and do not correspond to your natural facial expressions. When you see lines that do not fade easily in the morning and are more intense on the side that you sleep on, it is usually a sign that the lines were created by the posture of sleep and pillow pressure.
Silk pillowcases have the potential to prevent or at least delay the development of wrinkles, although not entirely. They are also less frictional and pulling on the skin than cotton, and this means fewer sleep lines and irritations. Silk is also less prone to picking up moisture on your skin so your nighttime skincare products will be more effective. The most effective way to prevent wrinkles and to slow any further noticeable aging is by taking care of your skin and protecting it regularly.
