This summer here are some destinations in India that are bound to take you on a sustainable holiday.

Khonomo, Nagaland

Located near the Indo-Myanmar border, Khonomo is known as India’s first green village. Surrounded by large rainforests, the village gained recognition in 2005 for its efforts in preserving ecological diversity and its practices of sustainable living. “The dwellings in Khonoma are uniquely crafted with walls made of bamboo and floors made of mud. Each home is encircled by a humble stone fence, adding to the rustic charm of the place. To promote environmental consciousness among its visitors, the town provides sustainable accommodation choices such as retreats and homestays. Travellers can enjoy a truly authentic experience and learn about the local culture in the village’s well maintained surroundings.

Munnar, Kerala

Nestled in the Western Ghats, Munnar’s location boasts cooler temperatures making it an ideal summer destination. Munnar is promoting responsible travel practices such as waste reduction, minimising pollution through non-polluting transportation options, utilising solar power and supporting conservation efforts. The iconic tea-plantations here also offer walking tours or using bicycles to minimise environmental impact.

Mawlynnong, Meghalaya

Nicknamed the ‘Cleanest Village in Asia’, Mawlynnong is a beautiful village in Meghalaya that is known for its sustainable practices. “The villagers have implemented several initiatives to reduce waste and conserve the environment such as banning plastic, using bamboo dustbins across the streets and composting. There are also several hiking trails in the area that offer stunning views of the surrounding countryside. A must-visit attraction nearby is the Living Roots Bridge, a UNESCO World Heritage Site located just a short distance away from Mawlynnong that has been ingeniously created by the Khasi tribes of Meghalaya,” says a spokesperson from Booking.com.
