Human Meta Pneumo Virus (HMPV) is a common respiratory virus that causes upper and lower respiratory infection. It is a seasonal disease, and like flu and common cold, usually occurs in winters and early spring.

HMPV is a virus and spreads from person to person through close contact with someone who is infected via secretions from coughing, sneezing or by touching contaminated objects such as toys, door handles and the like.

HMPV can cause infection in individuals of all age groups, however, complications and severe symptoms tend to be more common in very young children, elderly people, people with pre-existing lung conditions like COPD, asthma, and immunosuppressed patients like those on steroids and chemotherapy.

Symptoms are similar to regular cold and flu and can include cough, cold, fever, nasal congestion, sore throat and wheezing. Severe infections can present with breathlessness, chest tightness and high grade fever.

Wash hands frequently, avoid crowded places, avoid frequent touching of nose, mouth, and eyes.  If symptoms are noticed, do not panic. Often, infection subsides in 3-6 days. Keep watch out for warning symptoms like high grade fever lasting more than 3-4 days, wheezing, breathing difficulty, chest pain or tightness. Consult a doctor if any of these symptoms are noticed.

In summary HMPV infection most often resolves by itself with regular cough and cold medicines. However, very young children and elderly, and those with pre-existing lung conditions need to be cautious. If diagnosed with possible HMPV infection, stay isolated for 5-7 days, hydrate well, take medications prescribed by doctor. Keep a watch out for breathing difficulty, wheezing and high grade fever.
