
Kadaknath is an Indian breed of chicken also called as “Kali Masi” (Fowl Having Black Flesh). Bhils and Bhilalas, indigenous tribes, have traditionally raised these birds for centuries. They consider Kadaknath not just food but medicine, believing it strengthens the body, boosts immunity, and even enhances masculinity.
Kadaknath is special for several reasons, including its distinctive black appearance, superior nutritional values, and strong disease resistance. It boasts of a high protein content, less fat and is rich in iron, making it a healthy and flavourful choice. Kadaknath Chicken is believed to have significantly higher in iron content compared to other chicken breeds, contributing to their black skin and blood colour. The eggs are also considered nutrient rich, containing high protein and iron, like meat.
Entrepreneurs are capitalizing on the growing interest in Kadaknath chicken by establishing poultry centres in states like Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu. These initiatives aim to train local farmers to breed Kadaknath chickens, providing them with a sustainable income source.
- High Protein: Contains 25–27% protein, surpassing the 18–20% found in regular chicken.
- Low Fat and Cholesterol: Fat content ranges from 0.73–1.05%, with cholesterol levels around 184.75 mg per 100g.
- Rich in Iron: Offers about ten times more iron than regular chicken, aiding in boosting haemoglobin levels.
- Amino Acids and Antioxidants: Provides 11 essential amino acids and has higher antioxidant capacity compared to commercial broilers.
Naturally black meat and body due to a rare genetic condition called fibro melanosis, which causes hyperpigmentation.
