The Living Lightly Utsav 2025, the Centre for Pastoralism’s iconic exhibition shines the spotlight on the visibly, invisible pastoralists of the Deccan.
Bangalore is all set for a pastoral experience from January 31 to February 16 as the Deccan’s vast landscape and unparalleled diversity of animal species under pastoral care, and a varied range of pastoralist communities, their traditions, cultures, and ecologies come to the forefront.
Living Lightly is a travelling exhibition that originally started at IGNCA, Delhi in December 2016 and has since moved to Bhuj, Ahmedabad, Noida, Cochin, and Rishikesh. The concept is now in its sixth edition in Bangalore and showcases the stories of India’s pastoralists, a community that is rarely in the limelight.
Living Lightly is hosted by Centre for Pastoralism, an organisation working towards bringing mainstream recognition for livestock breeds and the community. To be held at Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts in Nagarbhavi, the two week event will have 18 immersive sections, that will highlight aspects like disappearing grasslands of the Deccan, culture, and economy of dung as a medium of exchange between pastoral communities, pastoral histories, cultures, and ecologies and more.
The Alemari Bazaar, a pastoral crafts bazaar showcasing pastoral designs, materials, and crafts and a pastoral cafe with flavours inspired by pastoral landscapes will also be part of the experience.
