Its Sankranti once again which means it is time to indulge in food that is not just traditional but has a meaning that goes beyond its taste.

The tradition of Elu Bella or a mix of jaggery, sesame, gram dal, dried coconut and peanuts in Karnataka to the til ke ladoo of Punjab, there is a common element that binds the country through food especially in the harvest months.

The dishes made during Sankranti have a deeper meaning of eating local, seasonal and fresh fare that is what we have been told from generations. The reason for this is that this is the day when the sun starts making its movement towards the north, signifying the start of Uttarayan.

This also means that this is the official start of the summer months. the choice of foods especially sesame is to ensure that the body is ready to face the harsh heat ahead.
