The old time bakeries of Bengaluru continue to whip up some old time favourites that continue to be relevant generations after they were first started.

“While Juny’s is inspired by pastry traditions Ria Belliappa experienced growing up in India, during my years working in Australia and travelling through places like Japan, have always been drawn to the warmth and accessibility of the Indian neighbourhood bakery. I think the best bakeries, regardless of where they are in the world, create a sense of belonging. At Juny’s, we try to honour that idea by creating pastries and desserts that tell stories—whether through local ingredients, seasonal produce, family recipes, or techniques gathered through travel and experience. Ultimately, we want people to leave with the same feeling that great bakeries have always created: comfort, familiarity and a reason to come back. The list of bakery items I love is far too long to be exhaustive. There is the khara bun, both the regular and spiral versions. The layered veg puff, which is best enjoyed by carefully separating each flaky layer until you finally reach the filling. The legendary alu bun from Srinivasa Bakery, better known to many as 12 Number Bakery in Sheshadripuram. The cream puff from OG Variar, Japanese cake, baked nippat, om biscuit, and the endless variety of bakery biscuits — from buttery sweet varieties to spicy khara ones,” she says.

In today’s times when most old things are making way for the new and traditions are being lost, these bakeries are doing their bit by holding the flag and batting to keep their roots intact. Passing on the baton of traditional bakes for generations is certainly commendable and these old time bakeries in Bangalore are showing exactly how to do it. Considering that most of the bakeries are being run by the third and fourth generations and there is an unmissable sense of pride in their legacy, the future of baked goods is shining bright.
