Lab Grown Diamonds

Spread the love

Lab-grown diamonds are having a moment under the sun even as the Government is giving an impetus to the industry.

When working with LGD (Lab-Grown Diamonds), there are some differences in making jewelry compared to using natural diamonds. While LGDs have the same physical and chemical properties as natural diamonds, there are a few key distinctions to consider:

Source: LGDs are created in a laboratory setting through a process that replicates the conditions necessary for diamond formation. Natural diamonds, on the other hand, are mined from the Earth. The sourcing of the diamonds can impact factors such as ethical considerations and environmental impact.

Availability: LGDs offer a more consistent and reliable supply compared to natural diamonds, which are subject to the limitations of mining operations. This means that jewelers have easier access to diamonds of specific sizes, shapes, and qualities when using LGDs.

Price: Lab-grown diamonds can be more affordable compared to natural diamonds of similar quality. This pricing difference can influence the overall cost of the jewelry piece.

Grading: Both LGDs and natural diamonds undergo grading based on the 4Cs (carat weight, color, clarity, and cut). However, some grading institutions may use specific terminology or certificates to differentiate between the two types of diamonds.

Consumer Perception: Some consumers may have different preferences or perceptions when it comes to LGDs versus natural diamonds. While LGDs are chemically and visually indistinguishable from natural diamonds, the origin of the diamond can be a consideration for some buyers.

From a jeweler’s perspective, the manufacturing process for jewelry using LGDs is generally similar to that of natural diamonds. The stones can be cut, polished, and set in various metal settings just like natural diamonds. The main difference lies in the sourcing, availability, pricing, and potentially the market perception of LGDs compared to their natural counterparts.
